Nintendo Strikes Back at Piracy – Jail Sentence and Fine for Modded Switch Seller in Japan!

Nintendo has once again demonstrated its firm stance against video game piracy. In Japan, the company successfully sued 58-year-old Fumihiro Otobe, who sold modified Nintendo Switch consoles capable of running pirated games. Otobe was sentenced to two years in prison and fined approximately $3,500. However, the prison term was suspended for three years, meaning he will avoid jail time if he commits no further crimes during that period.

Otobe’s modified Switch consoles, which came preloaded with 27 pirated games, were sold for around $195 each. This marks the first-ever jail sentence in a piracy-related Nintendo case in Japan, underlining the company’s serious legal efforts.

Nintendo has previously taken strong action, including a lawsuit against Canadian hacker Gary Bowser, a member of Team Xecuter, who was sentenced to 40 months in prison and fined $14.5 million. The company has also targeted emulator developers, such as in the recent case that led to the shutdown of the popular Yuzu emulator.

As the upcoming Switch 2 console nears release, Nintendo is expected to implement even stricter anti-piracy measures. The company’s aggressive legal approach continues to set a precedent in the gaming industry.
